DC Code § 7-1704 In any place, elevator, or vehicle where smoking is prohibited, the owner, manager, or person in charge must display signs stating either, “No Smoking Under Penalty of Law.” Additionally, in locations where smoking is restricted, signs must include the warning: “Smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, and may cause fetal injury, premature birth, and low birth weight in pregnant women.” Signs must also clearly state the maximum fine for violations of this subchapter. They should be prominently visible at the entrance and throughout the interior in sufficient numbers to effectively inform the public of the applicable law.
