What is an RRFB?

A Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) is a pedestrian-activated warning light installed alongside a crosswalk sign. When a pedestrian presses the button, two amber beacons flash in a rapid, irregular pattern that alerts approaching drivers someone is crossing. An RRFB does not stop traffic the way a signal does. It increases driver awareness at crosswalks that do not otherwise have one, which is why FHWA classifies it as a Proven Safety Countermeasure.

How it works

The Push Button

RRBF Push Buttons, one for going left and the other going right.

  • Wireless and battery-free - A piezoelectric actuator generates the power to fire the signal from the press itself, so there is nothing to charge and nothing to swap out.
  • No battery, ever - Piezoelectric power means no button cell to source, replace, or send a crew out to change.
  • Encrypted and wireless - It talks to the beacon over the same encrypted 902 MHz link, so there is no wiring to run to the button post.

The Beacon

Two rectangular amber beacons do the work of getting drivers to stop. They are bright, MUTCD-ready, and built to survive years of weather and road impact.

  • High-intensity amber LEDs - Rated SAE J595 Class 1, visible past approximately 300 m (1000 ft), behind a UV-resistant clear polycarbonate lens that resists yellowing and impact.
  • Auto-dimming - A photocell varies brightness with ambient light, so the beacon punches through daylight without glaring at night.
  • MUTCD Flash Patterns - WW+S (the default), BLOCK, or 2-5, all at 60 flashes per minute, on demand.
  • Smart Onboard Controller - Manages the photocell, flash patterns, encrypted 902 MHz communication (up to approximately 100 m / 300 ft free field), and scheduled activation.
