How SafetySign.com Collects Sales Tax
SafetySign.com collects sales tax where required by law in the United States. Since sales tax laws are always evolving, the exact list of states where we are required to collect sales tax changes frequently. To make it easy for you to see if or how much sales tax will be collected for your order, we calculate this for you automatically during checkout based on your shipping address. Since some states require the collection of taxes not just at the state level, but also at the county, city, or other local levels, the information shown during checkout will let you know where the sales tax we collect from you is going.
Every item sold by SafetySign.com is taxable. Depending on which state the order is shipping to, the cost of shipping may also be taxable; this is determined for you during checkout. If you apply a coupon to your order, tax is calculated after applying your discount. If you choose to donate to a charity when you place your order, we do not collect sales tax on your donation.
Why SafetySign.com Collects Sales Tax
Most online retailers, SafetySign.com included, are now required to collect sales tax in many states. On June 21, 2018, the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling in the South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. case which allowed states to require online retailers like SafetySign.com to collect sales tax even if they do not have a physical presence in the state. This ruling overturned previous cases such as 1967’s National Bellas Hess v. Illinois and 1992’s Quill Corp. v. North Dakota, which had restricted sales tax collection to only those states with which a retailer had a physical presence.
We’ve always collected sales tax in our home state of New Jersey. Due to the Supreme Court ruling, we are now required to collect sales tax in additional states. We’ve also improved our checkout experience so that sales tax is automatically calculated and updated as states change their laws going forward.
Brimar has opened an office in Fort Myers, Florida. This new location requires Brimar to collect Florida sales tax effective June 1, 2020.
Sales Tax Exemptions
If you are a tax-exempt entity or you’re purchasing items for use in a way that is recognized by your state as being exempt from sales tax, we need to know that when you place order so we can charge you correctly. During checkout, you will be given the opportunity to indicate that your order is tax-exempt. You will be responsible for sending us your tax exemption certificate via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or fax (800-279-6897) after you place your order. Please include your order number in the subject line of your email or the cover letter of your fax.
If you don’t have your certificate on hand when you place your order, please visit your state taxation department’s website to download the necessary forms. Do not indicate that your order is tax-exempt unless you are already registered and recognized as such by the state your order is shipping to.
We’ll deduct sales tax from your order after verifying your tax exemption certificate. We will contact you if there is an issue during the verification process, or you can check the status of your order in your order history if you placed your order using your SafetySign.com account.
You must provide your certificate within two business days; failing to do so will cause sales tax to be charged to your payment method. We are unable to remove sales tax from invoices after your order has shipped.
Alabama Sales Tax Notice
We collect the simplified sellers use tax on taxable transactions delivered into Alabama and the tax will be remitted on the customer’s behalf to the Alabama Department of Revenue. Our program account number is SS-R011008325.
