Texas No Gun Signs
Texas 30.06 & 30.07 Signs
On January 1, 2016, new Texas state laws went into effect allowing the open carry of firearms. The new laws allowed for the open carry of firearms by license individuals where concealed carry was previously allowed.
Property owners and businesses can still prohibit the open carry of a firearm, as they were previously able to prohibit concealed firearms onto the property.
To prohibit firearms, property owners can post signage as specified by the Texas Penal Code.
To prohibit the open carry of a firearm, a sign would have to include the following:
- This specific text: "Pursuant to Section 30.07, Penal Code (Trespass by License Holder with an Openly Carried Handgun), a Person Licensed under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code (Handgun Licensing Law), May Not Enter This Property with a Handgun that is Carried Openly."
- The same text duplicated in Spanish
- All text at least one inch in height, in block letters
The entire message must be printed in contrasting colors (such as black lettering on a white background).
The message must be displayed in a conspicuous manner at all property entrances.
For property owners and businesses to prohibit the concealed carry of a firearm, a sign would have to follow the same requirements, but with the following text instead:
"Pursuant to Section 30.06, Penal Code (Trespass by License Holder with a Concealed Handgun), a Person Licensed under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code (Handgun Licensing Law), May Not Enter This Property with a Concealed Handgun."
Given these requirements set by Texas, compliant signs must be of a significant size to display the necessary text and still remain legible.
We realize that these signs are too big for some storefronts, so SafetySign.com also offers the messages broken down to display on two separate signs. If a property owner were to post two smaller signs, one with 1-inch English text and another with 1-inch Spanish text, then they could comply with the laws and save space.
Posting only one type of sign (30.06 or 30.07) would prohibit only the concealed carry or only open carry of firearms. For businesses and property owners that wish to prohibit both concealed and openly carried firearms, both messages must be posted at each entrance.
If you are a retailer of alcoholic beverages in Texas, you should consult the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. You may be required to post additional signage such as a handgun warning sign or a "51%" sign. These signs are available through your local Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission office.
There may be additional and/or more accurate information about these signs and their requirements available through government offices, websites, and other resources. The Texas Department of Public Safety posted a summary of the new laws if you would like more information on them and how they could affect your business or property.
