MUTCD Stop Sign

The stop sign is a standardized sign listed in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) with a designation of R1-1. Stop signs are to be used when a full stop is required at an intersection for public roads, parking lots, and private roadways.

First appearing in 1915, the original stop sign featured black text on a white background. The octagonal shape was introduced a few years later in 1922 in order to standardize the shape of the sign.

During a 31 year period from 1924-1955, stop signs were yellow with black text. It wasn't until 1955 when the red signs we see today were released to be consistent with red traffic lights.
