Alt Route Marker Signs are MUTCD compliant (MUTCD M4-1a) and use effective images for traffic and pedestrian safety concerns on highway routes. Alt Route Marker Signs are helpful resources to aid in the protection of the health and safety on roads, and are not an alternative for required protective measures for eliminating or reducing hazards.

Option
The ALTERNATE (M4-1) or the ALT (M4-1a) auxiliary sign may be used to indicate an officially designated alternate routing of a numbered route between two points on that route.
Guidance
The shorter (time or distance) or better-constructed route should retain the regular route number, and the longer or worse-constructed route should be designated as the alternate route.
