2) What size sign should I choose?

  • 18 x 18" - Used for bicyclist traffic control on bikeways and shared-use paths
  • 24 x 24" - Great for parking lots and private roadways
  • 30 x 30" - The minimum size required for official street applications
  • 36 x 36" - Minimum size for multi-lane approaches and hazardous intersections

3) What height do I need to mount my stop sign?

MOST COMMON APPLICATION

In business, commercial, or residential areas (Fig. A): The minimum height, measured vertically from the bottom of the sign to the top of the curb, or in the absence of curb, measured vertically from the bottom of the sign to the elevation of the near edge of the traveled way, of signs installed at the side of the road where the view of the sign might be obstructed, shall be 7 feet.
Signs installed above sidewalks: The minimum height, measured vertically from the bottom of the sign to the sidewalk, shall be 7 feet.

In rural areas (Fig. B): The minimum height, measured vertically from the bottom of the sign to the elevation of the near edge of the pavement, shall be 5 feet.

Overhead signs (Fig. C): Shall provide a vertical clearance of not less than 17 feet to the sign, light fixture, or sign bridge over the entire width of the pavement and shoulders except where the structure on which the overhead signs are to be mounted or other structures along the roadway near the sign structure have a lesser vertical clearance.

The viewing distances listed in this chart reflect the viewing distance for each of the sizes. The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) does not provide specifics regarding the use of certain text heights at certain distances in order to improve legibility. Instead, the MUTCD has already determined all of the necessary text sizes and merely provides the specifications for various sizes of signs, which in turn all have specific use cases that must be followed in order to help keep drivers safe and aware of important regulations.
It is the responsibility of the end user to follow the guidelines and requirements of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) in order to provide road users with signs that ensure optimal legibility.

Using the latest printing processes, your MUTCD Stop Sign is printed without set-up charges or minimums. These advanced digital processes also reduce set-up times, helping to get your signs shipped out faster than ever. SafetySign.com prints your graphics and text straight onto the substrate. Your UV ink printed text and graphics will not peel, unlike signs from companies that laminate graphics over the material.

Printing Methods

We choose our printing processes for each product carefully so you receive the best quality product at the lowest price with industry-leading turnaround times. Depending on your size, material, quantity, and other factors, your sign will print using one of our carefully-tested methods.

SafetySign Printing
Cross-Hatch Ink Adhesion Test

SafetySign.com’s advanced printing process undergoes a stringent cross-hatching test. This specifically tests the adhesion and resistance to separation of the inks from the sign. In testing, a sample from the printing process is scored and covered in adhesive tape. The tape is removed and the sample assessed for adhesion quality.

We use a three-stage process to test all of our printing processes. We print our signs using only the processes that pass all three stages, giving you the highest quality signage possible.
