Safety Signs - What Size Do I Need

What Size Safety Sign do I Need?

With’s selection of sign sizes ranging from only 1.5” x 0.75” all the way up to 36” x 48”, it can be difficult to select the best size for your specific needs.

When deciding what size is the best for you, there are a few things to consider. First, where is the sign going to be used? Second, how much text and symbols will be on the sign? Lastly, how far in advance should you warn others of a potential hazard?

When thinking about where your sign is going to be used, consider the following: where the sign will be mounted, how close are people going to be to the sign, and how much information will need to be displayed.

Try putting a piece of paper or cardboard that is the same dimensions of your sign up to see if it is big enough. You might think a 14” x 10” sign is the right size, but you won’t really know without posting a sign and seeing if its message is legible.

When in doubt, a bigger sign is usually a good idea, especially for property and security related signs. This is also true when there are visual distractions such as moving objects or other signs that call attention away from your message.

If people won’t see the sign until they are very close to it, like most signs posted to doors or at entryways, smaller signs could be the best fit. These signs can be easily read without people having to back up to see the sign’s entire message.

Larger Signs for More Info

If there are multiple messages that all need to be posted, a large sign is a great alternative to multiple signs with separate messages. Large signs provide enough room to clearly display safety messages and symbols while making sure that all safety concerns are mentioned.

When posting safety signs, it is important to alert people early enough that they can avoid any potential hazard. This means that they can read and understand safety signs and react to the message well before they come into contact with a potentially hazardous situation.
