West Virginia Park Bans Tobacco Products

Henry David Thoreau once said we all need “the tonic of wilderness.” While many of us won’t isolate ourselves to a cabin in the middle of the woods, parks offer people a glimmer of what he proposed. They give you a chance to enjoy the sun, escape the in-doors, and breathe fresh air. In an effort to keep park-goers happy and healthy, one West Virginia district is trying to emphasize the latter part of that statement. The Board of Park Commissioners in Huntington voted to eliminate all tobacco related products from their parks – thus keeping the air as pure as possible.

The new tobacco-free policy will limit smoking and vaping to parking lots only. Signs such as Tobacco Products Prohibited will be posted throughout the park along with the addition of cigarette butt receptacles being installed in designated smoking areas. The Commissioners believe that the policy will create a healthier and safer environment for everyone.

While West Virginia’s smoking population is large, the new policy has actually received a lot of positive feedback from the community. It seems that many people surveyed support a healthier park environment as they search for the tonic of wilderness.
