Trying New Traffic Patterns

Trying New Traffic Patterns

Pennsylvania recently opened its first diverging diamond interchange, the 73rd such interchange in the country. Not familiar with a DDI? You’re not alone.

Using a series of lights, and directed by traffic signs, marked pavement, and curbed islands, cars cross over to what would normally be the opposite side of the road. This allows vehicles to flow through, while making it easier and safer to enter and exit the highway. Traffic then returns to the normal side of the road.

Early test cases have shown a reduction in accidents and delays. The interchanges can appear confusing at first, but drivers have reportedly adapted quickly. We’re all for safer roads, so it will be interesting to see if the design becomes more widely adopted.
