Signs, The Blight of Baton Rouge

According to Mayor Sharon Weston Broome, illegally placed Road Signs are the “blight of Baton Rouge.” In order to battle the overwhelming “threat,” daily robocalls will be implemented to inform offending business and organizations that they are in violation of the city-parish ordinance.

While it’s easy to make fun of the idea that robots are defending a city against illegal signs, these signs are actually a safety hazard to drivers, pedestrians, and local workers. Depending on where they’re placed, signs create blind spots, cause distractions, and present physical hazards that harm utility or maintenance workers.

In order to quell the rise of illegally placed road signs, automated calls, which many people feel are an even bigger blight, will be used to battle against the local menace by making it clear that signs must be removed. The call will stress the consequences of the sign ordinance and demand immediate removal of the sign.

If you happen to receive one of these phone calls, don’t make the mistake of ignoring it. Failure to comply with the law will result in a fine ranging from $200 to $1,000. Not to mention, you’ll receive a call daily until the sign is removed and you pay the fine. I’m not sure which outcome is worse, having to pay a fine or having a robot call you every day. Either way, it’s best to just remove the illegal sign.
