New Waze to Beat Traffic

We’re big fans of using real-time traffic data to get to our destinations faster and more safely. One of the largest providers of crowd sourced GPS services has been thinking even bigger.  In just the past few weeks the Rhode Island Department of Transportation and the City of Toronto have joined Waze’s Connected Citizens Program, a free traffic data sharing exchange. Waze provides user generated traffic and accident data that administrators can use in infrastructure decision making and traffic planning. Rhode Island is also using Waze data to update messaging like accident alerts and estimated commute times on overhead LED highway signs. In exchange, governmental agencies provide advance notice of special events, construction, and planned road closures to Waze for dissemination. This also improves Waze’s accuracy, allowing for a better user experience. In the end, it’s the drivers who benefit most from the cooperation.
