Flying Trash Cans of Mulch

Let’s create the scenario for a second. You’re minding your own business, perhaps driving to work, and out nowhere a giant can of mulch is lifted out of a nearby truck, propelled through air, and comes crashing down into your windshield. It’s basically a scene out of Final Destination¬†and totally as frightening as you’d expect.

For Dallas resident Kathy Lanham, it’s an all too realistic situation. While commuting on I-635, an unsecured garbage can full of mulch is seen smashing into the windshield of her Honda CR-V. Thankfully for insurance purposes, and our enjoyment, her dash cam was rolling during the event, giving us a first-person view.

Lanham saw the can coming straight towards her, but she was fairly limited on options. If she swerved to her right she’d hit metal pylons and if she swerved to the left she’d crash into a concrete lane divider. Due to her quick wit, she made it out of the accident unscathed (her car, not so much).

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, there were 1,241 crashes caused by insecure loads in the state last year. Of those accidents, 103 were fatal.

While transporting cargo in the bed of your truck or on a trailer, please make sure you secure your load. It doesn’t take much for an accident to occur.

Now, if only there was an option to design and order Custom Traffic Signs to remind drivers.
