MUTCD and OSHA Requirements
For temporary traffic control, MUTCD and OSHA requirements call for a paddle measuring at least 18 inches wide with letters at least 6” high. The STOP (R1-1) face shall have white letters and a white border on a red background. The SLOW (W20-8) face shall have black letters and a black border on an orange background.
For crossing guard usage, the MUTCD states that the STOP (R1-1) paddle shall be an octagonal shape and the background of the STOP face shall be red with at least 6-inch series upper-case white letters and a white border. The paddle shall be at least 18 inches in size and have the word message STOP on both sides.
Paddles used for temporary traffic control or crossing guards duties must be reflective when used during the hours of darkness. They are not required to be reflective if used only during hours of daylight.

Paddle Weights
Paddle weights vary based on size and materials used. Lighter paddles are easier to hold and reduce fatigue.
