Ear Protection Labels

Choosing the right safety labels for hazardous areas can make all the difference when it comes to keeping your workers safe. Which of these labels is the best choice for areas with loud noise hazards?

Ear Protection Signs

Although each of these will help remind your employees to wear hearing protection, (A) is the best choice. Here’s why:

According to the latest revision of the ANSI Z535.2 standard, the "WARNING" signal word from (A) instantly identifies a hazardous situation that if not avoided, could result in severe injury or death. This means that if hearing protection is not worn in the area, it is possible that a worker could suffer from hearing related injuries, and such an injury is considered serious by ANSI, thus making the "WARNING" signal word the only choice.

Additionally, the warning label (A) also clearly identifies what exactly the hazard in the area is, informing workers why they need to wear hearing protection beyond a certain point. It also includes a bright blue graphic depicting a person wearing hearing protection, serving as a quick, at-a-glance reminder that hearing protection is required in the area. Therefore, (A) represents the best choice for reminding workers that hearing protection is required for their own safety in areas with loud noise.

SafetySign.com does not recommend or specify the use of a specific safety sign because it does not have knowledge of the hazard(s) our customers are identifying. It is the customer’s sole responsibility to identify the hazard(s) that may be present and select one or more signs (stock or custom) that accurately identify their specific hazard(s) and complies with any applicable federal, state or local laws or regulations, any worksite specific rules or regulations and/or any applicable safety standards (including, without limitation, ANSI and/or OSHA standards). SafetySign.com disclaims any and all liability (excluding liability for our Product Warranty contained in our Terms and Conditions) for any sign selected by a customer and shall not be responsible for any personal injury or property damage resulting from the use of signs purchased from it or for the independent interpretation made of any applicable federal, state or local laws or regulations, any worksite specific rules or regulations, and/or any applicable safety standards (including, without limitation, ANSI and/or OSHA standards). Customer shall indemnify and hold SafetySign.com and its corporate parent and its officers, directors and affiliates harmless from and against any and all claims, loss or expense (including attorneys’ fees) arising from or related to the purchase and use by customer or any third party of any sign purchased by customer from SafetySign.com.

The viewing distances listed in this chart reflect the maximum viewing distance for the sign under favorable viewing conditions.
Favorable viewing conditions are those which allow for a clear, unobstructed view of the message on the sign. Examples of favorable viewing conditions are a bright lighting source over the sign, clear weather conditions, and a clear line of sight with no obstructions blocking the view of the sign from certain angles and no other nearby signs creating distractions.
In unfavorable conditions, the sign is viewable at up to half the favorable distance. Unfavorable viewing conditions are those which make it difficult to read the message of the sign. Examples of this are poor lighting such as a dimly lit room, obstructions blocking the view of the sign from certain angles, poor weather conditions, and other signs posted nearby which create a distraction.
It is the responsibility of the end user to determine the correct size, viewing distance, sign positioning, and sign size for your specific hazard. According to the ANSI Z353.2 sign standard, a ratio of 25 feet of viewing distance per inch of text height, under favorable viewing conditions, should be used to determine the size of your sign. Under unfavorable viewing conditions, such as in low light or for signs with complex messages, the ratio of viewing distance to text height is 12.5 feet to 1 inch.
